What’s better, weight lifting gloves or lifting straps? I have been getting this question on a regular basis, even the experienced lifters are confused about their utility and which tool works best to improve grip strength. Gloves and straps, both have the capacity to drastically improve the lifting performance.  

The basic difference between lifting gloves vs straps: Gloves are designed to provide extra padding and improved grip to lifter and lifting strap is designed to wrap your wrist with a long piece of a strap that you need to loop around the barbell or dumbbell. Gloves are versatile solutions that protect your hand while a variety of movements and lifting straps are exclusively developed to improve pulling movements.

Both are designed in different ways to facilitate different requirements and knowing the minor differences can help you improve lifting performance at the gym. Lets get into detail about about all the basic difference between weight lifting gloves and straps.

1- Versatility

Ask yourself a question, are you looking for a versatile solution or a grip for a specific purpose. Straps are limited to only pull motion, that means you can use them for the deadlifts, pullups, bent over row, etc

Workout gloves are definitely a versatile solution that will support you in almost any kind of workout. Weight lifting gloves can be used for pull and push movements both. Push movements include bench press, overhead press, dips, etc. Whether you are doing a gym workout or bodyweight calisthenics, a good weight lifting glove will support all kinds of workout patterns.

Additionally, you need to learn the proper technique to wrap the straps properly which is not required with gloves.

Straps will last longer than you can imagine but you might require to change your gloves every year. 

Additionally, gloves can smell really bad because of sweat and excessive use.

Beginner level lifters doesn’t really need anything, because they are not lifting heavy weight. Main focus should be on the proper technique. 

Little bit of discomfort is good for the growth but if your experience acute discomfort then you should be using gloves while training. 

Gloves vs straps  for powerlifter? 

Gloves can not fulfill the requirement of powerlifters. If you are training for maximum strength then you should be opting for straps. 

Gloves vs straps for bodybuilding?

Bodybuilding is more focused on muscle isolation and hypertrophy, gloves are a better choice to train for hypertrophy while preventing painful calluses. 

Gloves vs straps for calisthenics?

Gloves is a more suitable choice for calisthenics or bodyweight workouts since they require improved grip and added padding. Additionally, gloves also allows variety of hand grips while workout.
